Antony Blinken arrived in Israel, marking beginning of broader Middle East tour intended to revive discussions on Gaza ceasefire.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a broader Middle East tour intended to revive discussions on a Gaza ceasefire and the region’s future following the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. This marks Blinken’s 11th visit to the region since the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, which ignited the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Blinken’s week-long itinerary will also take him to Jordan on Wednesday and Doha. It comes as the region anticipates Israel’s response to Iran’s October 1 ballistic missile strike, which could disrupt oil markets and risk sparking a wider war between the two nations. During his discussions, Blinken will emphasize ending the conflict, post-war plans for Gaza, and improving humanitarian aid, according to a senior State Department official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.Last week, Blinken and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent a letter to Israeli officials urging specific actions to alleviate the deteriorating situation in Gaza, warning of potential limits on U.S. military assistance if no action is taken.
The official noted that Blinken’s talks with Israel and Arab nations will focus on “day after” issues, particularly concerning security, governance, and reconstruction, as detailed plans in these areas are seen as essential for any sustainable resolution to the conflict. Additionally, the Secretary of State will discuss strategies with Israel and other nations to achieve a diplomatic resolution regarding Hezbollah and will continue dialogues with Israel about their anticipated response to Iran’s missile attack.
