US President-elect Donald Trump is all set to mark his return to Washington today for a visit with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office, a key tradition in the peaceful transfer of power.
This marked Trump’s first time in the White House since leaving office in 2021 following the Capitol attack. Donald Trump had previously declined to participate in the traditional handoff after his 2020 loss. We’re going to be okay,” Biden said in a recent speech, softening his previous criticisms of Trump.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reiterated Biden’s stance, stating that the president is dedicated to “making sure that this transition is effective, efficient… because it is the norm, yes, but also the right thing to do for the American people.” National security adviser Jake Sullivan added, “The administration will uphold the responsible handoff from one president to the next.”
Trump’s visit also coincides with leadership elections in Congress, where he is expected to meet Republican lawmakers. House Speaker Mike Johnson welcomed Trump’s return, stating that Republicans are “ready to deliver” on his “America First” agenda.
