Ottawa also expelled a senior indian diplomat which triggered a tit-for-tat move from new delhi and deepened diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Nijjar, who worked as a plumber, left the north Indian state of Punjab over two decades ago and became a Canadian citizen. He had supported the formation of a Sikh homeland. India designated him a 'terrorist' in July 2020.
