Second round of government-opposition talks begins in Islamabad as both teams arrive, with PTI long march and opposition demands in focus.

Second round of govt-opposition talks begins at Parliament House The second round of talks between the government and opposition has begun at Parliament House after a slight delay, with members of both negotiating committees arriving for the meeting.

The discussions come amid questions over whether the PTI’s planned long march will be postponed. Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq is hosting the talks and has been awaiting the arrival of both negotiating teams in his chamber, where preparations for the meeting have been completed. The speaker welcomed the participants and delivered the opening remarks as he presided over the session.

Addressing the participants, the speaker said that the previous day’s negotiations had taken place in a cordial atmosphere and expressed hope that the dialogue would continue in the same spirit.

“Yesterday’s negotiations took place in a very cordial atmosphere, and we are resuming the dialogue from that point,” he said. Sadiq stressed that negotiations were the only way to resolve the issues between the parties. He expressed hope that all sides would carry the talks forward in a constructive and cordial atmosphere. He also thanked the representatives of the government, the PPP and the opposition for participating in the negotiations.

Federal ministers Amir Muqam, Rana Sanaullah, Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Talal Chaudhry and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry are representing the government in the talks. The PPP delegation includes Sherry Rehman, Naveed Qamar and Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani. Representing the opposition are Barrister Gohar Khan, Raja Nasir Abbas, Aamir Dogar, Asad Qaiser, Haleem Adil Sheikh and Salman Akram Raja. The talks were scheduled to begin at 3pm, but their start was delayed slightly as some members of the negotiating committees were still awaited.

The opposition has finalised its draft of demands and proposals for presentation during the second round of negotiations. The opposition has also expressed reservations over statements made by members of the government negotiating committee, adding another issue to be discussed during the meeting. The talks are being closely watched amid uncertainty over whether the PTI long march will be postponed following negotiations between the government and opposition.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament House, senior PPP leader and government negotiating committee member Sherry Rehman said she remained optimistic about the prospects of the negotiations.

“We always maintain a positive outlook and engage in negotiations based on hope,” Sherry Rehman said. She added that resolving political matters through democratic means produces better results, stressing the importance of dialogue in addressing differences.

“We value the position of the opposition’s negotiating team,” she said, indicating that the government side was taking the opposition’s stance into consideration. Responding to a question about a recent tweet by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, Sherry Rehman refrained from commenting directly on the statement. She said the government attached importance to the position of the opposition’s negotiating team and expressed the expectation that the chief minister would personally clarify the matter during the meeting.

With both sides now assembled at Parliament House, the second round of negotiations is expected to focus on the opposition’s demands, the reservations expressed over government committee members’ statements and the broader political situation, including the proposed PTI long march.
