At least 55 governments around the world are using travel restrictions as part of their repressive tactics against perceived political opponents, according to a report released on Thursday.
The governments cited in the report use at least one of these four methods in retribution for political activism or dissent, the US nonprofit dedicated to promoting democracy said. One of the most high-profile examples was the October 2018 assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul when he went to pick up documents needed for his marriage to his Turkish fiancee.
"We have had all of our property confiscated, our house, all of our assets, our retirement pensions."
