US Central Command commander General Michael Kurilla visited Beirut to oversee the transition. During his visit, he met with Lebanon’s Armed Forces commander, General Joseph Aoun, at a monitoring center in Beirut to discuss efforts for a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, according to CENTCOM.
General Kurilla also observed the LAF’s replacement of IDF troops in Al Khiam, describing it as “an important first step” toward ensuring peace and stability in the region. The IDF clarified in a statement that while troops have been withdrawn from certain positions under the ceasefire terms, the military remains vigilant to safeguard Israeli interests in Lebanon.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati praised the development, calling it a major step in enhancing security in southern Lebanon. He highlighted the army’s deployment in Khayyam and Marjayoun as a reinforcement of their presence in line with the ceasefire resolution.The discussions between General Kurilla and General Aoun also covered the situation in Syria and its impact on Lebanon and the wider Middle East.
