Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has proposed a series of measures to resolve the current political deadlock, including meetings between the Prime Minister and opposition leaders, the formation of a joint committee to address grievances, and ensuring legal and medical rights for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi criticized these proposals as an attempt to sabotage previous agreements.
Karachi and Lahore host cycling races to raise breast cancer awareness KP CM proposes meetings between PM Shehbaz, leaders of oppo; Suggests formation of committee to address grievances of opposition; Demands provision of legal, medical facilities to Imran Khan, Bushra; Proposes contact between Center, KP govt to eliminate terrorism in province:In connection with the negotiations that took place between the government and PTI on the party’s planned long march on Islamabad on October 4, KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Sunday put forward his suggestions so that a way out of the present impasse could be found out, while on the other hand, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi termed these proposals an attempt to sabotage the previous draft, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Sharing the draft of the suggestions on social media, the chief minister said that meetings should be arranged between the prime minister and leaders of the opposition in both houses of the parliament, and the parties should be made bound to ensure progress within two months. The CM said that the prime minister should constitute a joint political committee, comprising representatives of the government alliance and the opposition, which would hold negotiations with the opposition on political matters and to sort out differences.
“All legal and medical facilities should be provided to Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in light of the jail manual, the constitution of Pakistan and relevant laws,” he said, adding that the opinion of personal physicians of Imran and Bushra should be given preference in their treatment. Similarly, CM Afridi went on to say, the couple should be given the right to meet their family members and lawyers as per the jail manual and relevant laws.
Likewise, the process of looking into the applications filed by Imran, Bushra, and other prisoners languishing in jails on political grounds against their convictions should begin within 10 days. The chief minister also proposed that continuous and meaningful dialogue between the federal and the KP governments should be ensured so that terrorism in the province could be eliminated and people’s lives and properties could be protected.
Similarly, representatives of the federal and provincial governments should hold a meeting within 72 hours of any incident of terrorism in order to chalk out a clear, comprehensive and practicable strategy in order to restore peace in the restive areas. The chief minister said that it would only be after the federal government gave an assurance in writing that these suggestions would be implemented that the PTI would announce the cancellation of its long march.
However, he made it clear, if the government acted contrary to the assurances it had given or tried to drag on the negotiations unnecessarily, PTI reserved the right to protest in a peaceful manner, in accordance with the law and the constitution. Reacting to CM Afridi's draft, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday said it was an attempt to sabotage the draft agreed between both the parties earlier.
The minister said that a separate draft had been approved to deal with terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The provincial government, he said, had agreed to review the Police Act, 2026, and to prevent terrorists from building sanctuaries in KP. Naqvi went on to say that the KP government had also agreed that it would strongly condemn acts of terrorism by TTP, TTA and other terrorist outfits.
"It had been agreed that the provincial government would own counter-terrorism operations and in this regard, would consolidate its collaboration with Pakistan Army," he said, adding that the provincial government had also concurred that it would support the federal government's policy on Afghan refugees.
