Microsoft loses exclusive provider rights of computing capacity for OpenAI
REDMOND Microsoft has lost its exclusive provider rights of computing capacity for OpenAI, the artificial intelligence start-up it has heavily invested in.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft confirmed that while it will maintain a favourable position, OpenAI can now seek additional computing capacity from other providers, with Microsoft retaining the "right of first refusal." This shift in their partnership comes as part of the announcement of the Stargate Project, a joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle, Softbank, and other investors, aiming to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the US.
Oracle has been named as the key technology partner, with data centre construction already underway in Texas. Despite the change, Microsoft will continue to supply computing resources for OpenAI’s API and remains the key partner for intellectual property related to OpenAI’s products, including Copilot.The decision highlights growing competition in the AI space, as Oracle and others ramp up their involvement in the sector.
