The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday adjourned the hearing of applications seeking the suspension of sentences awarded to human rights activist Imaan

The Islamabad High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of applications seeking the suspension of sentences awarded to human rights activist Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha until 4 June due to the unavailability of the special prosecution team.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the case was heard by Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, who was informed by the prosecutor that although a three-member prosecution team had been appointed, its members were not available to appear before the court. The prosecutor told the court that one member was travelling from Lahore, while another was currently engaged in proceedings before another bench of the Islamabad High Court.

During the hearing, Justice Azam Khan remarked that he had been nominated to attend mediation training but was present in court solely to hear the matter. He noted that he had missed his training session, which had begun at 8:30am, because of the case. The judge further observed that the matter was being heard in light of directions issued by the Supreme Court and stressed that the court was bound by those orders.

The prosecutor requested that the hearing be rescheduled for either Thursday or the following Monday. After obtaining the consent of defence counsel Faisal Siddiqi, Justice Azam Khan fixed the matter for hearing on Thursday, 4 June. During the proceedings, Faisal Siddiqi asked the court to direct the prosecution not to seek any further adjournments.

In response, Justice Azam Khan remarked that it was not appropriate to repeat such directions repeatedly, adding that all parties were obligated to comply with the Supreme Court’s orders.
