An 18-year-old teenager named Axel Rudakubana has pleaded guilty to murdering three young girls in a stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, England. The incident sparked widespread riots across the UK, fueled by far-right agitators spreading misinformation. Rudakubana also admitted to producing ricin and possessing an Al-Qaeda training manual, although the attack is not being treated as terrorism.
A teenager on Monday pleaded guilty to killing three young girls in a stabbing spree last year that sparked the UK's most violent riots in a decade.
Authorities blamed far-right agitators for fuelling violence, including by sharing misinformation claiming the alleged attacker was a Muslim asylum seeker. Rudakubana admitted a total of 16 charges, including the three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder and one count of possessing a blade.
In December, not guilty pleas had been entered on Rudakubana's behalf when he refused to speak in the court, and the case had been set for a four-week trial. Despite being 17 years old at the time, restrictions on reporting Rudakubana's name were lifted in August due to concerns over the spread of misinformation.Taylor Swift, then in the middle of her Eras tour, wrote on Instagram that she"was completely in shock" after the attack on the dance class at the start of the school holidays.
