Taliban minister calls for reopening of girls’ schools in rare public criticism
KABUL Differences within the Taliban were laid bare after Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai called for the reopening of girls’ schools in Afghanistan on Monday, going against the Taliban’s supreme leadership under whose orders the education of girls in the country was banned.
In a rare public rebuke, Stanekzai cited historical examples, saying, “During the time of Prophet Muhammad , the doors of knowledge were open to both women and men.” He also deplored, “Girls cannot go to mosques. The doors of schools and universities are closed to them, and they do not even have access to religious schools.”
