The remarks by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to reporters indicate that the United States maintains a strong military presence in the Strait of Hormuz and is prepared to respond to any attempts by Iran to interfere with the flow of traffic through the waterway.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains "ironclad", warning that President Donald Trump has a range of options if Iran continues to challenge US efforts to control the strategic waterway.

Hegseth made the remarks to reporters as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with the Strait of Hormuz at the centre of the confrontation. Hegseth claimed that Iran was unable to effectively challenge the US presence in the strait and said Washington had maintained its blockade.
"Iran wants to play games with things like the Strait of Hormuz. They don't control it, we do," Hegseth said, according to The Associated Press. He claimed that Iran had "literally gotten nothing through" and described the US blockade as "ironclad", adding that Washington could maintain it for as long as necessary. Hegseth urged Tehran to "make the right choice", warning that Trump would have "all the options he needs on the table" if Iran did not comply.
Hegseth also reiterated the Trump administration's position that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon.

"The message is very simple: Iran will never ever ever have a nuclear weapon," he said, adding that Trump was determined to prevent Tehran from obtaining one. The comments come as Washington and Tehran remain engaged in tensions over Iran's nuclear programme, sanctions and control of the Strait of Hormuz. Recent diplomatic efforts have focused on reopening the waterway and easing the confrontation, although major differences remain between the two sides.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a key route for global energy supplies. Reuters reported that LNG shipments through the waterway increased in September despite continued security concerns, although volumes remained well below pre-war levels.
