All public and private educational institutions in Lahore are anticipated to remain closed on August 26 due to the Urs of Hazrat Ali Hajveri, also known as Data Ganj Bakhsh. Last year, the city administration declared a local holiday for this religious event, and the public, including students, are expecting a similar holiday this year.
The Lahore High Court has already declared a holiday for courts in observance of the Urs. However, the city administration has yet to confirm whether a public holiday will be announced for this year’s event. If the August 26 local holiday is approved, students will enjoy a long weekend from August 24 to 26, returning to school on August 27.The provincial government is yet to announce its decision regarding local holiday on August 26 in wake of Urs of Data Ganj bakhsh.
The Urs, which usually spans several days, is held in the heart of Lahore, attracting devotees from across the region. They come to pay their respects, engage in prayers, recite poetry, and listen to Qawwali. The event also features the distribution of free food to all attendees, fostering a spirit of community and generosity.
It is a time of deep spiritual reflection and communal gathering, symbolizing the rich Sufi traditions and practices while celebrating the teachings and legacy of Data Ganj Bakhsh.
