Did the CFL’s player relations committee members try to divide and conquer by tinkering with crucial ratio language to sweeten the deal for Americans at the expense of Canadians?
If Canadian Football League negotiators were trying to divide players along lines of nationality at the last minute, you really have to wonder what the heck they were thinking.
Edmonton Eskimos player rep Ryan King, who attended bargaining sessions in Calgary and Vancouver and spent hundreds of hours communicating with other CFLPA reps and executives and is totally up to speed on the state of negotiations, wouldn’t address that question directly. But this is what he said to reporters on Sunday at Commonwealth Stadium.
Once the deal is ratified and announced as official, perhaps by Wednesday, that’s likely to open some floodgates. Player reps with intimate knowledge of the negotiations may well be empowered to really speak their minds. The CFL has stayed closed-mouth throughout and might not see the wisdom in trying to explain whatever was happening on Saturday.
