It may just look like a fancy bench, but this piece of street furniture may change the way we sit – and locals are unknowingly giving it their stamp of approval with their bottoms.
The “smart bench” has been installed on the median strip at 313 Drummond Street in Carlton with tiny sensors that measure how often it’s used, at what times and in what ways. A nearby existing metal bench also has a sensor.Since February 1, the sculptural lairy green bench near Lygon Street has been used nearly 4000 times – an average of 43 times a day and almost six times more than the older bench.
Inhabit Place director Obelia Tait, whose staff conducted place auditing – a technique using data and surveys to capture how different spaces are used and what can be improved – found media strips provided untapped opportunities. “It’s also kind of artsy ... Melbourne has plenty of functional furniture but not much of it is attractive.”
While the council is yet to sketch out a future rollout, it’s possible more median strips become home to such benches, with slightly different functions according to the area.The old-school metal bench nearby is also being measured for its usage.RMIT associate professor of urban design Quentin Stevens said cities were increasingly capturing data about environments that could be considered mundane, but actually were fundamental to quality of living.
