In this week’s episode, James and Anthony look at the ACCC’s decision to block ANZ’s $5 billion takeover of Suncorp’s bank and ask whether the RBA is done raising rates.

It’s a theory in competition policy that in a market where the players are basically the same, selling basically the same products, they won’t collude, but they’ll co-ordinate – they’ll wait for one to move their price, and then they’ll follow that one.

The problem is that co-ordination sort of looks like competition, so it’s very hard to prove, very hard to detect, it’s even very hard to sustain.. The winner may be Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, while Suncorp was stitching up the deal to sell to ANZ it was knocking on the door trying to get in to explore its own merger, and wasn’t really getting much traction.Another winner is Commonwealth Bank.

In terms of electricity, we’re now at around 36 per cent renewable generation which is a fairly rapid progression.
