Announced on Monday, a mandatory health insurance scheme will cover private sector employees and domestic workers starting next year.
Employers will be required to cover their registered workers’ health coverage during residency permit issuing or renewal.
Currently, laws in Abu Dhabi and Dubai mandate employers to obtain health insurance for their employees. In the UAE Capital, the mandatory scheme includes coverage for employees and their families. While chairing the Cabinet meeting, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, pointed out that 98.8 percent of the workforce in the country is covered under the Workers’ Protection Programme. The scheme ensures the protection of workers’ wages and other dues in case their employers declare bankruptcy.
